At the Copa (CO!) Copacabana by: Remi James

When I think of Rio de Janeiro, I want to sing like Barry Manilow and Samba dance the night away. It’s one of the most exhilarating cities that I have ever been to.

Now, I have to admit that for a long time I delayed going to Rio for such silly and superficial reasons. I had convinced myself that I needed to drop 3 dress sizes before heading to the famous beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. After a few years of not having any willpower to lose even 1 pound – let alone a dress size – I decided to book my trip to Rio anyway.

I raided out my piggy bank to stay at the legendary Copacabana Palace. As soon as I entered this dominant but very glamorous 1920’s hotel, I knew I had made the perfect decision. This is the hotel where Royalty, The Rich Elite, and A-list Celebrities would stay. With its superior beach location, exquisite Cipriani restaurant; and the

Pervasive historic feel it’s a fantastic spot to stay in Copacabana.

Rio de Janeiro has many breathtaking attractions, but my personal favourite is the handsome, Christ the Redeemer! I cannot put into words just how amazing this 98 ft. tall, by 92 ft. wide statue is. It left me in absolute awe! It’s no wonder it’s one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

I travelled to Rio to celebrate the New Year and to experience the Brazilian traditions. First thing, you want to wear a fabulous white outfit for the occasion. White symbolises peace and good luck. Next thing: buy a gift for IEMANJA (a Brazilian Myth), the Goddess that controls the sea. I brought flowers, but apparently some people take it a step further and shower IEMANJA with expensive Jewellery as well. And then you throw your gifts into the sea in hopes that she will fulfil your dreams and wishes. Finally you should jump over 7 different waves while making your New Year’s wishes, 1 – for each time you jump a wave. I had a truly magical experience and enjoyed watching some of the most incredible fireworks displays!

I don’t know if it was a mere coincidence, or the Brazilian tradition actually works… but that New Year was BRILLIANT!! If I could afford it, I would celebrate New Year’s in Rio every Year!
